The Constitution and the 1824 essays The Constitution and the 1824 Presidential Election Processes In all my readings on the Electoral College and the Constitution, I have found that there are several differences between what the Constitutions meant when the election process was defined and how the 1824 election interpreted them to mean. The Constitution has systematic instructions for the election of our President and what to do if there is a conflict with the Electoral College. While in the 1824, they added another means for electing our President. According to Thomas Jefferson "governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." (Jefferson 516) Simply put each American has a responsibility in the election of our President. The election of 1824 put the Constitution's election process to the test. On Election Day, there were still four candidates in the running for President. Since no candidate won with the constitutional majority of electoral votes, was sent to the House of Representatives for them to vote on. The electoral vote is the primary method for electing the President. Each state shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature therefore may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Numbers of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled to in Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding and Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed Elector. Act 4 of the crucible is dynamic theatre Essay The Crucible provides us with what can only be described as masterpiece of dramatic writing. Written by Arthur Miller in 1952, the most powerful scenes in The Crucible have several common characteristics; very effective use of stage directions, long build-ups of suspense that come crashing down in thundering climaxes, intense displays of emotion and an abundance of dramatic irony.  The play, set in 1692, is based upon the outbreak of accusations of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. Miller wrote the play using this 17th-century case (and fictionalising it) to comment on a 20th-century phenomenon the exposure of suspected communists. In 17th century Salem the inhabitants feared witchcraft as America feared communism in the 1950s; and many similarities can be drawn between the events of the two periods. Both were exaggerated out of all reasonable proportion and each contains communities that display an irrational fear of an ill perceived threat to their stability of life. Indeed, the theme of culpability that runs throughout the play is mirrored constantly in modern society, particularly in politics, where those in office are frequently blamed for incidents that are completely beyond their control. The writing of this play stemmed from Millers personal interest in the Salem witch trials and at the time, America was in the middle of the McCarthy political Witch Hunt. Miller himself was called before a committee, and he began to notice a certain resemblance between the two trials, such as naming and shaming by people anxious to divert attention from themselves, together with confessions given under duress. This has resulted in the play being seen as a political allegory. At the beginning of act 4 we see symbolic setting and scenery created through Millers clever use of stage directions, which in turn, introduces and establishes the tone that will continue throughout the remainder of the play. For example, the reference to moonlight seeping through the bars of the darkened cell metaphorically suggests to the reader that there is still hope for the  wrongly accused sufferers of the witch hunt, the light being a positive aspect in the otherwise bleak atmosphere. This technique of using light symbolically is revisited later in the scene; the new sun is pouring in, reinforcing the theme of dramatic lighting that is so very important within the play. It is perhaps this phrase that best sums up the intensity of relief felt at the end of the ordeal, and emphasizes the theme of transition and change, highlighted in particular by the word new. Another way in which Miller successfully creates tension within the play is through the use of apposite props and evocative scenery, most notably in the jail; a high barred window, near it, a great, heavy door. This evokes a strong sense of oppression, in particular the heavy door which could be arguably be seen as a metaphor for the ignorance displayed by the townspeople of Salem. Furthermore, we see the play end on a very dramatic note; The final drumroll crashes, then heightens violently, surely emblematic of the last brutal act of the witch-hunt; the violent demise of the hero and the end of the suffering of those persecuted by fear and ignorance. Dramatic theatre would be nothing however, without the powerful characters at the heart of the story, and the depth they bring to it through their emotions and actions. At the very beginning of the scene, we see a representation of the main theme of the story; the helplessness of the villagers against the cruel authority of Danforth, illustrated by the forcible removal of Tituba and Sarah Good from their cell. The power struggle between those in office and the common man draws great empathy from the audience and reinforces the brutality of the entire ordeal. Indeed, the womens response to the guards; We goin to Barbados, soon devil gits here highlights the villagers great superstition around Satan, giving the audience insight into how the situation has spiraled out of control, and how their fears fuel the fires of hysteria, allowing the oppression of the villagers to continue unabated.

The argument of immigration and whether it enhances or threatens life in the United States is ongoing. Having been through the immigration process, because my wife is a immigrant from Germany, has caused me to know immigration enhances life in the United States. Diversified cultures have strengthened our social fabric and have molded our national morals and social values. Thru the years every new immigrant brought with them the best ideas of their society and together with guts and hard work they turned a rugged wilderness into flourishing towns and cities creating opportunity for the next generation of immigrants. Our society was founded with the idea that each individual is important, honest labor brings rewards, and each individual is guaranteed the right to be free. Peter Martin wrote "Towards Something American" in Harpers Magazine (July 1994), and asserted he is not sure we even have a American culture. Sure we do, American culture can not be defined in the traditional sense and has slowly evolved from the European culture of the initial immigrants to a vast vat of the world's cultures and traditions. We've adapted the best of the world's cultures and traditions to fit in with American society, molding our social values. Not that each American thinks and acts the same way, that makes Americans special. We have many ideas of what our culture should be. The Germans have October Fest, the Irish have Saint Patrick's day, and the Jew's have Hanukkah. Hitler knew that if he provided Germany with autobahns and the like he would need workers to construct such developments, they would need supplies and so the ‘domino effect' went on. The program had such a positive feedback that by the end of 1933 the Nazis had fed 5,000 million Reich marks directly into construction. Thousands that were once without work were now employed and the economy began to pick up, if people had money they were more likely to buy consumer items. To target peoples new found income Hitler reduced motor vehicle tax to encourage investment in the automobile, therefore boosting car production which doubled from 1932-33. Once a work force had been assembled the Nazis wanted organisation. Millions found themselves in the RAD (Reich Labour Service) and were put to work. By 1935 it become compulsory for both women and men aged 18-25 to do 6 months work in the RAD an extremely well disciplined workforce. In an addition to this The German Labour Front was set up to replace the free trade unions banned previously in 1933. The pay and working times were regulated and compared to many occupations workers did a lot of work for a small amount of pay. Despite this there was no alternative except a poverty that nobody wanted to endure once again, so on went Hitler's firm hold on those that worked within the union. To prevent any outbreaks of protest or a revolt, Adolf created two organisations to help support the workers, to boost mood and productivity. The first of these was the ‘Beauty Of Labour' which aimed to improve conditions at work, the theory was that if the workplace was a pleasant place, the employees would not mind working hard. The second initiative was called ‘Strength through Joy' a reward scheme that provided cheap holidays and leisure facilities to reward those that earned it.
